It has been reported that Justin Truman, head of the studio at Bungie, who has held the position since last year, will be stepping down. This news has surfaced amid mass layoffs at the studio, with potentially hundreds of employees losing their jobs across both the Destiny and Marathon teams.
In a post on social media, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier confirmed that ‘people familiar with the situation’ are reporting Truman’s departure.
Bungie Falls Further Into a Black Hole
Bungie is suffering hard at the moment, and it comes after months of struggles at the firm. Marathon, the studio’s most recent game, wasn’t the commercial success it was endeavoured to be, and it failed to hit the market and gain traction out of the gate.
It was released in March, but it has already wound down the charts to be rendered almost irrelevant by everyone except a core contingent of players who are staying true to the game through thick and thin.
In the most recent Marathon news space, it was revealed that a bid to capture a new audience with a fresh PvE offering would land in July. However, the ‘new mode’ faced some scrutiny when it was unveiled, as it doesn’t ring true to the core extraction model the game has tried to deliver.
Earlier today, Bungie announced that layoffs would be taking place following the end of Destiny 2, which will receive no further updates going forward. On social media, hundreds of employees impacted by this action voiced their displeasure and revealed that their time with the company was up, with layoffs impacting both Destiny and Marathon-focused team members.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier recently dropped another bombshell on social media:
Bungie faces a critical point at this juncture, with Marathon having failed to hit, and all other projects being in the ‘incubation’ stage. It might be all she wrote for the firm, unless something drastic happens.
