Discord is rolling out its new age verification system globally starting Sept. 23, with the company expecting more than 90 percent of users to avoid manual verification. The platform will automatically estimate users’ ages using existing account information, while adults who cannot be identified will have several ways to confirm their age without submitting a government ID or selfie.
The app delayed its original global rollout in February following criticism over privacy and data security. The new system adds several verification methods, although users will not need to confirm their age simply to continue using Discord. Regular messaging, voice calls, and non-age-restricted servers will remain available, while unconfirmed accounts will have to verify their age to access adult content and certain settings.
