What is The XBOX ‘Billion Daily Players Goal?’

A major reset has been announced at XBOX, resulting in several studios departing Microsoft, but an apparent goal to attract a billion daily players has gone widespread on social media.

In the July 6 announcement of wholesale XBOX changes, CEO Asha Sharma spoke about various areas of adjustment, as well as outlining targets for the company moving forward.

Of those quotes, the topic of a ‘billion’ players has sparked a major discussion, but there’s significant misunderstanding, as Insider Gaming has explained.

Is XBOX Targeting a Billion Daily Players?

No, XBOX is not targeting a billion daily players, and quotes from Asha Sharma have been misconstrued in their meaning.

With a global estimated population of 8.3 billion, targeting a billion players daily would, to put it bluntly, be madness and would set a completely unachievable goal.

The population numbers include the very young and elderly, the majority of whom would not own an XBOX console to play on, as well as those in poverty worldwide, who are not XBOX customers.

With global lifetime sales of the XBOX Series X|S consoles estimated to be around 35 million, there’s simply not enough players for XBOX to capitalize on to achieve such a lofty target, even when PC and PlayStation 5 players enjoying XBOX games are taken into consideration.

What Did Asha Sharma Say?

Asha Sharma’s specific quote regarding attracting a billion people was regarding entertainment, which does not include only those playing on XBOX consoles or enjoying XBOX games.

While Sharma did not go into specifics, those ‘entertainment’ figures will likely include those watching content creators playing XBOX games, watching any XBOX-licensed content, like a Halo TV series, for example, alongside playing mobile games under the Microsoft umbrella.

The specific quote from Sharma was: “I want XBOX to be one of the few companies that entertains more than a billion people each day and gives everyone the opportunity to create and connect.”

While there’s no denying that a billion people being entertained daily by XBOX is a lofty, and perhaps unrealistic, target, it’s a far cry from declaring that XBOX wants a billion daily players.
