Valve Addresses The RAM Crisis And The Impact On Steam Deck 2

The RAM crisis has caused problems for everyone from manufacturers to consumers. For Valve, after the release of the Steam Machine was delayed, there have been questions about whether it will impact the development and eventual release of the Steam Deck 2.

Valve is currently working on the Steam Deck 2, but has made it clear that nothing will be released if it can’t offer a real increase in performance from the current model. But even with component prices rising by 200%-300% in some cases, Valve says that its development plans haven’t been impacted by current economic affairs.

Valve Is “Looking At It In The Same Way”

Speaking with IGN, Valve developer Pierre-Loupo Griffais spoke candidly about whether the RAM shortage, among other concerns, has impacted the work being done.

“We’ve talked before about how we want to make sure there’s a very delineated performance improvement for something like a future Steam Deck, and I think we’re still looking at it in the same way,” Griffais said.

“It’s just a matter of looking at the current conditions and seeing how and when we can deliver something like that. But from what we’re working on, as far as the user experience goes and what the product that we’re trying to build goes, it’s very similar goals.”

What’s clear from Griffais’ comments is that he doesn’t say that a potential release timeline has changed. Then again, there’s never been any sort of release target other than a tech insider claiming Valve was hoping to release in 2028.

Despite internal targets and goals not changing, it doesn’t mean Valve hasn’t changed anything. In the last year, the company has ended production of its most affordable version of the Steam Deck while also increasing prices by as much as $300.
