Unexpected New Yooka-Laylee Game Discovered Online

Playtonic’s Yooka-Laylee series clearly has plenty of interest as the company continues to push the IP, seen as the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie, and looks to be doing so with a new game, and not one you’d have thought people were asking for.

Yooka and Laylee continue to get around in new games, remakes, and guest appearances in other games. The original crowd-funded 2017 release was remade last year, and Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair was a 2.5D platformer spin-off.

We’re now shifting gears to a different genre altogether, it seems.

If you head to SteamDB and search for ‘Super Yooka-Laylee Kart,’ you’ll discover the brand-new game’s upcoming playtest.

There’s nothing official about it yet.

We don’t have any other details, but the name and cover art suggest that the franchise is heading down the kart racer route, which so many other colorful platformers have taken.

No, seriously, you wouldn’t believe how many IPs have had a kart racer:

  • Mario
  • Sonic
  • Crash Bandicoot
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Final Fantasy
  • Disney
  • Nickelodeon
  • Garfield
  • Kirby

..and the list goes on.

Most of these are established brands or products with huge followings. Yooka-Laylee could be a huge hit, so we’ll have to see the playtest and how it plays out.

It might just be me, but in a world with many kart racers, it will be interesting to see if there’s enough interest in Super Yooka-Laylee Kart. Saying that, let me know if you are curious about it by telling the team and me via the Insider Gaming Discord.
