The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Release Announced

Factions is still one of the best and most underrated multiplayer modes in gaming. The Last of Us Part 2 decided against multiplayer at launch, and we never got the long-awaited, post-launch add-on. Well, now it’s kind of happening.

Naughty Dog decided to omit a new Factions mode from TLOU Part 2’s release. It was devastating, but we thankfully got an amazing main game to enjoy at least. But a multiplayer component was announced, and was being worked on for a while, until The Last of Us Online was canceled ’24 hours’ before its reveal.

If you’re still pining for TLOU Online in Part 2, it’s coming in an unofficial capacity.

YouTube channel Speclizer has posted 25 minutes of new gameplay footage from ‘The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod.’

The progress looks incredible, and the video’s description has stated that September 2026 is the release timeframe for the mod. If you’re on PlayStation, you won’t be able to get any of this action, and it’s only coming to PC.

Multiplayer is seamlessly integrated into the main game’s menu and hub, and features locations and gear from The Last of Us 2 as you’d expect from a multiplayer mode.

The love for Factions has never gone away, with the canceled Last of Us Online content being called the “Best Multiplayer Game” by Naughty Dog devs.

This should, hopefully, scratch that itch if you’re on PC. Another alternative is Terminal War, the much-hyped indie title, which also plays heavily into TLOU Factions gameplay, and we showed Terminal War’s latest trailer during the Insider Gaming Showcase.
