Steam Machine User Reports First ‘Red Line of Death’ GPU Failure

A Steam Machine user appears to be the first to report a major GPU failure with the device, which fans have quickly dubbed the ‘red line of death’.

Only recently released, the Steam Machine is currently available through a random draw reservation system, and gamers around the world have been logging in to their new devices.

However, it doesn’t appear to be all fun and games, as one user has already reported a major GPU failure, claiming the issue arose after only around 20 minutes.

‘Pretty Cool For The 20 Minutes That It Worked’

Posting on the Steam Machine Reddit community, a user posted an image of a solid, red line that, according to Steam’s own information, is an indication of a major GPU failure.

Commenters were quick to dub the error the ‘red line of death’, a reference to the infamous ‘red ring of death’ in the Xbox 360 era that wiped out the consoles for thousands of gamers worldwide.

The major concern, however, is that this allegedly occured after just 20 minutes of using the Steam Machine, which suggests a major hardware issue, although it’s unclear if the incident is a one-off or evidence of an underlying problem.

It’s certainly sparked a talking point, though, with the post receiving over 3,000 upvotes and 500 comments.
