STALKER-Like MMO ‘Pioner’ Player Count Hits Double Digits As Devs Go Silent Again

Pioner, an ambitious post-apocalyptic MMORPG that echoes games like STALKER and Fallout 76, has its writing well and truly on the wall. In the last couple of days, the game’s player count has dipped irrevocably low, hitting double digits and threatening to push into the meagre realms of single digits on Steam.

In the last 24 hours, the game managed to secure a peak concurrent player count of just eleven users. Unfortunately, it’s a downfall of epic proportions, and while it has been unfolding, the developers at GFA Games have been mostly shrouded in silence.

This is a huge heartbreak to me personally, as I absolutely love Pioner and have long said great things about the game.

Is Pioner Going to Shut Down?

Pioner is an online-only MMORPG, so that means if it ultimately fails, it’ll be taken offline forever. That’s a huge shame, as it took many years to bring it to the market, and once upon a time, it was important enough to warrant a showing at E3. The game received heavy investment and managed to garner the attention of millions of potential fans, but the game’s early access delivery was somewhat lacking.

It dropped on Steam in early access in December 2025, which means it hasn’t even enjoyed a solid year on the market.

Earlier this year, the developers at GFA Games found themselves embroiled in a financial scandal, as tales of unpaid salaries emerged while the studio battled against an order of bankruptcy. The studio’s leadership team addressed these concerns and suggested all was okay at the firm, but the radio silence since then speaks volumes.

Having spoken with the developers, I can say there’s still passion and determination there, but that’s not enough to keep the game online.

Unfortunately, Pioner was only ever going to be an MMO with no offline alternative, so if it goes, it’s likely gone for good.

When Pioner was gearing up for release, it was painting the picture of an open-world, hardcore-styled MMO with some serious meat on the bones. It represents something with so much potential, casting players into a diverse environment made up of multiple biomes, presenting them with a story, side quests, skill paths, some minor base-building elements, customization out the wazoo, and, of course, the ability to play with friends.

It’s PvE-focused but also has modes that accommodate players wanting to explore PvP. It looks great, and although it doesn’t always run very well, it offers an altogether quite enjoyable experience that I’ve poured hours into, quite happily.

The last update the team posted for the game on Steam was on July 28th, and it concerned a minor update. On social media, nothing but quick server status messages has been posted for several weeks.

It’s sad, but we might be seeing the end of another ambitious live-service shooter.
