In an all-new financial report submitted to the U.S. SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), Sony has made a few comments about how it intends to use artificial intelligence to strengthen or evolve the PlayStation ecosystem.
When the report was published, eagle-eyed readers, such as Game File’s Stephen Totilo, noticed that some boilerplate and introductory information had been changed year-over-year to tell a different story, in some places. These changes also introduced a spate of narrative about how Sony is leaning on AI to ‘unleash the creativity of studios.’

PlayStation + Artificial Intelligence = Power
In a breakdown pulled together by Game File, the key points of Sony’s recent SEC filing were clearly outlined. The nature of how PlayStation intends to interact with artificial intelligence, still the big talking point of the industry, was established under a few sharp bullets.
- AI for game development “productivity”
- AI for more efficient routing of player transactions
- AI for recommending games to players on the PlayStation Store
- AI and machine learning to improve graphics
Ultimately, it’s nothing new or innovative, and it’s exactly how studios aplenty have been leaning on artificial intelligence for years. The AI and machine learning element to improve graphics is something that has come on in recent months, with innovations pushed forward by NVIDIA, and the PS Store recommendation element is hardly a novel concept.
The game development productivity note is run-of-the-mill, too. Developers leaning on AI to iterate faster, automate simple or repetitive tasks, or to procedurally generate content and assets are all concepts even the most tech-ignorant gamers could easily understand.
As Totilo suggests, this could be a simple way to weave some trending corporate buzzwords into the report, as nothing here screams an attempt to evolve into the next big thing in the game development space.
