Silent Hill’s Newfound Success is Balancing on a Great Knife’s Edge

The Silent Hill franchise is back in the spotlight after some rough years. Between spin-offs like The Short Message and Ascension, the more recent attempts to revamp Silent Hill in a fresh light fell flat, but thanks to Bloober Team’s work on last year’s Silent Hill 2 remake, the future is looking much brighter for the series.

That isn’t all that the Silent Hill franchise has in store, though. Silent Hill f is right around the corner, while Konami recently confirmed that Bloober Team would be returning to develop a remake of the original Silent Hill. With two more Silent Hill games on the way, there is a lot to be excited about, but depending on the tones of the upcoming titles, Konami could be risking offering horror fans too much of the same thing back-to-back.

The Return of Silent Hill Could Make Its Own Franchise Oversaturated

Silent Hill f Already Has Similar Vibes to the SH2 Remake

  • Silent Hill f arrives on September 25.

Between the SH2 remake last year and Silent Hill f this year, Konami is offering up a one-two punch of Silent Hill content. Even more interesting, early footage of Silent Hill f is already promising some major similarities to SH2. Between the oppressive atmosphere and increasing the amount of in-game combat, Silent Hill f seems primed to follow in the SH2 remake’s footsteps. Because of its new monsters, Silent Hill f may even be more terrifying.

With the over-the-shoulder camera angle, melee mechanics, and the franchise’s special blend of psychological horror, it wouldn’t be surprising if Bloober Team’s work on SH2 was used as a blueprint for Silent Hill f. Of course, there’s no way to know this for sure. Both projects had been in development around the same time, so It’s not too far out of the realm of possibility that Konami and Bloober Team shared their concepts and ideas with one another, since the latter was contracted by the former. Silent Hill f feeling like the SH2 remake definitely isn’t a bad thing, but with the promise of a fresh version of SH1 on the horizon, three games with practically the same tone could risk growing old.

Silent Hill f will be available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Silent Hill 1 Remake is Still Shrouded in Mystery

Konami only announced the SH1 a few weeks ago, so there are barely any details known regarding what to expect. Since Bloober Team is confirmed to be taking over the project, there’s plenty of reason to be excited, but it also means that the remake is bound to feel incredibly similar to SH2, as well. Bloober Team has proven itself as a talented horror developer, but if the SH1 remake wants to feel fresh, there will hopefully be a solid stretch of time between it and the release of Silent Hill f.

Right now, it’s unclear just how far into development on the SH1 remake Bloober Team is. Just because it was recently announced doesn’t mean that work hasn’t been done on the project yet. If Konami really wants to capitalize on the franchise, it wouldn’t be surprising if the SH1 remake was aiming for a late 2026 target. There’s no way to know for sure, but if there is only a one-year gap between each new Silent Hill game, it could quickly become overkill.

Bloober Team is also working on its own IP. The developer’s next game is Cronos: The New Dawn and is slated to arrive in the latter half of 2025.

Also, this is purely speculation, but if SH1 is being remade, it only makes sense for SH3 to get remade as well. If that’s the case, then the next few years could become overcrowded with Silent Hill games that all share similar tones. Only time will tell, but Konami may want to pace itself.
