This weekend, you might be participating in Pokémon Go Fest, a celebration of all things… Well, Pokémon Go! When you log in from July 11-12, you’ll notice there’s a six-part quest available that’s built around Genetic Mastery in Pokémon Go. It’s a series of challenges offered by Professor Willow, and it’s all centered around Mega-Evolved Mewtwo.

Below, I’ve outlined every task you need to complete to wrap up the Pokémon Go Genetic Mastery Timed Research challenge as quickly as possible. It’s a limited-time deal, so you’ll need to move fast!

Here are all six parts of the Pokémon Go Genetic Mastery line and what you need to do to unlock the maximum rewards.

  • Hatch 2 Eggs (100 x Gengar Mega Energy)
  • Mega Evolve a Pokémon (1 x Star Piece)

Step Four

Step four is a little different, as it requires players to make a choice. You’ll now need to make a decision that’s based on one of the biggest talking points in the game this weekend:

Mewtwo X vs Y in Pokémon Go?

You need to pick between these two evolutions. Here’s a bit more information:

  • Mega Mewtwo X: Psychic and Fighting power with massive physical capabilities
  • Mega Mewtwo Y: Not as strong, but immense Psychic power

Here are the challenges in this step to unlock the Mewtwo encounter:

  • Catch 3 Psychic-Type Pokémon (2026 x Stardust)
  • Make 10 Curveball Throws (26 x Ultra Ball)
  • Complete 6 Field Research Tasks (1 x Super Incubator)

Here are the resulting rewards for the new challenge:

Mega Mewtwo X Path: 2026 x XP, 26 x Great Ball, 2026 x Stardust, 300 x Mewtwo X Mega Energy, Mewtwo, and 26 x Mewtwo Candy

Mega Mewtwo Y Path: 2026 x XP, 26 x Great Ball, 2026 x Stardust, 300 x Mewtwo Y Mega Energy, Mewtwo, and 26 x Mewtwo Candy

Step Five

  • Mega Evolve Mewtwo (2026 x Stardust)
  • Power up Psychic-type Pokémon 10 Times (26 x Ultra Balls)
  • Win 3 Raids Using a Team of All Unique Pokémon Species (1 x Super Incubator)

Step Six

Step six is all about claiming the most important rewards from Pokémon Go Fest’s Genetic Mastery challenge:

  • Claim Reward (2026 x XP)
  • Claim Reward (2026 x Stardust)
  • Claim Reward (2026 x XP)

Additionally, you’ll earn 3 x Mewtwo Candy XL, 1 x Elite Charged TM, and 26 x Mewtwo Candy.

Mewtwo X vs Mewtwo Y – Which Should You Pick?

Most people are gravitating towards Mega Mewtwo Y for this choice, as you’ll ultimately be getting one of the most formidable fighters in the entire game, provided you can win that battle. Mega Mewtwo Y beats Mega Mewtwo X where it matters most, and the psychic capabilities it has are second to none.

Mewtwo X isn’t weak by any means, but judging from Pokémon tips, polls, and picks online, Mega Mewtwo Y is the one to go for.

Now, if you’re in that fight, you’ll want to know the best Mega Mewtwo Y counters, naturally.

Mega Mewtwo Y is weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks, so bear that in mind. The best counters for Mega Mewtwo Y, according to the top battle sites in the business, are as follows:

  • Necrozma – Dawn Wings
  • Mega Tyranitar
  • Shadow Tyranitar
  • Mega Absol
  • Mega Gengar
  • Shadow Hydreigon
  • Shadow Darrai
  • Lunala
  • Mega Houndoom
  • Eternatus

So, nothing simple, unfortunately. But that should help you get started with these challenges.
