Pokémon Champions Shatters World Championship Viewership Record

The Video Game Championships (VGC), Trading Card Game (TCG), Pokémon GO, and Pokémon UNITE all recorded their highest viewership at this year’s World Championships.

This yea’rs TCG, UNITE, and Go tournaments were all the first to draw in audiences above 150k.

A likely contributor to that was the fact that Nintendo and the Pokémon Company put a much stronger emphasis on co-streaming.

This year’s event was broadcast on over a hundred unique channels. For comparison, Pokémon Unite was the only game to feature more than 50 co-streamers last year at last year’s championships.

And the Pokémon Champions VGC tournament particularly benefited from some big-name streamers, including Sergio ‘knekro’ García (1.3m Twitch followers), Leslie ‘fuslie’ Fu (1.3m Twitch followers), and Miyoung ‘kkatamina’ Kim (650k Twitch followers).

However, official channels still sported by far the highest viewership.

This is potentially thanks to the Twitch Drops campaign that the Pokémon Company won, with an Incineroar in Pokémon Champions and a costumed Pikachu in GO as part of the rewards.
