New Details On What Was Cut From Ghost Recon Project OVR

We have new details on some of the features that were cut from the in-development Ghost Recon game, currently known as Project OVR.

If you recall, in late June, we reported on the fact that development of the new Ghost Recon title was struggling due to what developers called “unrealistic deadlines and poor planning and management”. That was followed by news that the scope of the game had been cut to meet its November target for entering beta.

Now, as first revealed on this week’s episode of Insider Gaming Weekly, we have new information regarding some of the features that have been removed or pushed out to a later time.

Several Smaller Features Are Gone From Project OVR

According to documents provided to Insider Gaming under the condition that they not be shared publicly, at least three features were cut completely from the game, with others being “rescheduled” to be done later, but not before the game enters its Alpha stage.

Regarding what’s been cut entirely, the first is proximity mines that could be placed on the map by the player. The second feature was a Workbench that sources say was a more detailed customization and building feature. Weapon customization is still expected to be a part of the game, but it’s not going to be as deep as originally planned.

The final feature that was cut was helicopters. According to one source, they were deemed “too risky” to implement properly for the game to make its deadlines.

As far as what was rescheduled, a Camp Jammer ability along with an ability to free hostages who are tied up was pushed back. Development on those specific features hasn’t been restarted as of publication.

Finally, several others are still planned, but when and if they begin development will come after a reassessment when the game reaches Alpha. These include a feature that would see NPC characters be able to execute hostages, NPCs being able to shoot from a moving vehicle through windows, and a new in-game currency called “Cryptel”. Instead of Cryptel, players will have to use Military Credits to make in-game purchases.

Ubisoft has not responded to multiple requests for comment in recent weeks. Should one be received, it will be added to this story.
