It appears that most people don’t care about spending $100 on a video game. At least, when that game is Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6).
In a new interview with CNBC, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick spoke about the game’s pre-orders and how it’s performed so far.
Pre-orders Exceeded Expectations
Zelnick said that pre-orders for the first Grand Theft Auto game in 13 years have gone “much better than expected”, leading to the company’s excitement growing for release.
When breaking down the pre-orders, Zelnick was asked how it’s breaking up between the $79.99 ($80) standard edition and the $99.99 ($100) ultimate edition. Zelnick said that it’s “skewing more to the premium edition.” However, he didn’t want to go as far as believing that will be the norm come the game’s November launch.
“That might be a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are pre-ordering now,” he said.
The $100 ultimate edition of GTA 6 comes with five exclusive stores as well as other content such as a ’95 Grotti Cheetah, a ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy, personalized weapon variants, and more.
Of course, pre-orders of the game are great for Take-Two and developer Rockstar, but Zelnick says the company knows they have to deliver if they want those not pre-ordering to buy the game at launch.
“We never claim victory before it occurs,” Zelnick said. “I know that our Rockstar Games division has tried to innovate, and understands that as great as the anticipation is, we need to exceed expectations. I believe that we will.”
GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. An extended look at the game is coming on August 27 at 3pm ET, exclusively on Netflix before coming to YouTube at 9pm ET.
