Has Senua Been Canceled? Ninja Theory XBOX Split, Explained

Senua is set to be the third entry in the psychological action series, with Ninja Theory once again at the head of the project. With significant changes to XBOX in 2026, it’s left many wondering if Senua is in danger ahead of its 2027 release window.

Rumors of major changes and XBOX restructuring began in mid-2026. Following a successful Summer Game Fest 2026 outing for XBOX, news turned to reports of layoffs and big internal decisions.

This came to a head on July 6 with Asha Sharma’s full memo on Xbox Layoffs. So let’s see how it all affects Senua, if at all.

Has Senua Been Canceled?

2027’s Senua has not been canceled, and Ninja Theory’s partnership with XBOX ending won’t change the game’s development status, with it still being in full production.

The official statement from Asha Sharma addressed Senua and Ninja Theory:

‘None of our first party publicly announced games or projects are being cancelled as part of these reductions. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have entered terms to join new ownership with funding to complete and grow Senua and State of Decay 3.’

This means Senua is still well on course for release in 2027. Obviously, it’s been stressed that this is all public knowledge, but you never truly know what’s going on behind the scenes.

What’s Happened to Ninja Theory?

Ninja Theory was revealed to be part of a massive company-wide restructuring at XBOX, which saw the developer leave XBOX, but a deal has been made to ensure the studio can carry on as before, allowing them to complete development of Senua.

Firstly, Ninja Theory isn’t going anywhere.

XBOX hasn’t closed the studio down, far from it. As I mentioned in the statement above, Ninja Theory is carrying on as normal, but it just won’t be attached to XBOX in the way the previous Hellblade games have been.

This means Ninja Theory stays afloat, and it can finish work on Senua—the same with Undead Labs and State of Decay 3.
