GTA 6’s NPCs and Police Will React More Realistically

Rockstar’s GTA 6 lets NPCs cower, fight, or escalate, while police investigate crimes with descriptions and evolving Criminal Profiles.

August 27, 2026, will forever be known as the day real information about Grand Theft Auto 6 started to drop. Not only did Netflix profile the game with a new preview, but several outlets also got to play it and learn more about what players can expect when it drops worldwide for PlayStation and XBOX on November 19.

Rockstar has wanted to hone in on the realism that Grand Theft Auto 6 will provide, and that extends to the non-playable characters that are normally just open targets for players going on rampages in a Grand Theft Auto game. That also means a more realistic wanted level from the police and fewer ways to hide from them.

GTA 6 Changes NPC Reactions and Wanted Level Escapes

In a new interview with IGN, Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson says GTA 6’s NPCs may not run away from you if you instigate an altercation; they may escalate.

“I think in previous GTA games you were a bit all-powerful,” says Nelson. “You were the only one with an invisible arsenal hidden away. Apart from the police, everyone would run in terror from you if you started acting out. This world in GTA 6 is not like that.”

Additionally, there are new Criminal profiles where, if you are seen committing a crime, police will respond and may even get a description of you, the vehicle you’re driving, the clothing you’re wearing, and whether you’re walking around as a couple or individually. This means players may need to change clothes or split up as Jason and Lucia to evade the police.

“The streets in this game are narrower and more realistic in terms of scale. Which, in addition to all the density of the traffic on the roads, makes driving slightly more challenging and requires a bit of skill,” warns Nelson.
