Gray Zone Warfare’s 0.5 Update Lands This Fall and Includes a Hideout, Drug Smuggling, and Insane New Locations

Gray Zone Warfare is about to be taken to the next level by MADFINGER Games. If it wasn’t enough that we’re mere months past the massive 0.4 update that overhauled the entire game, the team is shaping up to move through another major milestone with 0.5, slated to drop this Fall.

With this super-sized update, Gray Zone Warfare officially moves from pre-alpha to alpha. It also gets a wealth of enhancements and additions, including a full-fledged hideout, drug smuggling missions, multiple playable characters, incredible new locations, fresh weapons, and so… much… more.

I sat down with MADFINGER at Gamescom to learn about every inch of 0.5, and here’s what I’m cleared to tell you.

Gray Zone Warfare Continues to Evolve

Earlier this year, MADFINGER Games deployed the 0.4 update in Gray Zone Warfare, and it proved to be a rampant success for the company. It took the player count higher than it had been since the game’s early access launch way back in April 2024, and the sentiment around the game skyrocketed.

Right now, Gray Zone Warfare is sitting on 1.7 million units sold, and as the ecosystem evolves, more players are finding their way into it.

But if you thought you’d seen a lot during the 0.4 update, you’re not even ready for 0.5.

I spoke to MADFINGER about 0.5 at length at Gamescom, learning the ins and outs of this monumental patch, which officially moves development from pre-alpha to alpha. The update comes with a thick new gameplay layer, introducing a richer, deeper world with unbelievable new details bursting with verticality and high-tier loot opportunities.

The game’s story and lore are being blown wide open, and we’re getting one step closer to that ultimate destination: Ground Zero.

In 0.5, players will finally get access to the earliest iteration of a hideout, which will allow them to source critical resources to craft modules and build a place to call home. This will also open the door to crafting, as you can imagine.

But this isn’t just an arbitrary hideaway. It’s a narrative-driven thing that will one day serve as the gateway to the endgame – Ground Zero. Once you’ve constructed the hideout in Gray Zone Warfare, you’ll have some rather unique and lucrative opportunities open up, allowing you to use a chemical lab to craft a bunch of items.

Including narcotics.

It starts with a more positive spin, with Lab Rat requesting that you create some medical-grade morphine, but after that, you realize that this is a breeding ground for something a bit more nefarious. Vulture requests that you use your new lab to craft high-risk, high-reward stacks of narcotics, undertaking bold missions to transport extremely valuable bundles of drugs across Lamang to various destinations.

In a similar vein, Artisan asks that you use a micro lab in your hideout to reverse-engineer and salvage high-end military technology secured from all corners of Lamang. But what’s stopping you from then taking these valuable, rare items and selling them to mysterious buyers on the global black market?

And while players are carrying their illicit goods across the map, what’s to say you couldn’t pick up your weapons in defense of all that is good, hunting them down and crippling their malicious trade operations?

Can you see the possibilities emerging?

Lamang, But Denser

Lamang is undergoing another massive change with 0.5, with MADFINGER Games focusing on making the base world much denser. With a series of diverse new locations being added, MADFINGER is altering the narrative to focus on the mystery of Lamang a little more, edging closer to Ground Zero and whatever happened to bring this corner of the world to its knees.

Up first, you’ve got Radar, a massive installation, at the heart of which sits a rusting, decrepit tower. Underneath the enormous radar dish, you might find bunkers containing more than you bargained for.

Then, you’ve got the ominous Asylum location, which plays heavily into the darker side of Lamang. Imagine long, eerie corridors littered with the detritus of the torture that once echoed through the halls.

If you fancy an even tougher challenge, you’ll want to head to the Military Camp, which sits on the border of Ground Zero. It’s a fully realized military base with a sprawling layout, high-tier loot, and tough, well-trained enemies guarding every corner of it.

Now, let’s talk about how you can approach gameplay in the 0.5 update, because that too has been expanded.

With this patch, players will finally get multiple playable characters. That means that you can now assume control of a PMC from each faction, which allows you to link up with your friends like never before.

Also, PvE and PvEvP progression is being separated, which deepens the sense of challenge in Gray Zone Warfare. No longer will you be able to thicken your stash on the ‘easier’ PvE platform and then take that equipment over to the PvP-focused world.

I’m happy to tell you that this is just the beginning for Gray Zone Warfare. There is a vast stack of content in the pipeline, including a juicy assortment of things I can’t tell you about. Trust me when I say that the team at MADFINGER is preparing a platter of entertainment that you can’t even predict.
