In a recent report, it was stated that ‘Google Search as you know it is over,’ and that’s terrifyingly accurate. During a recent conference, Google lifted the lid on a new AI-powered evolution of the traditional Search platform, doing away with the typical method of returning links and instead opting for a fully conversational results box that strips information clean out of the sites providing it.
In the last year or two, we’ve seen sites collapse under the fallout from Google’s ever-changing algorithms and SEO mechanics, but this could be the final nail in the coffin for more, especially for newer, younger sites trying to carve out a name for themselves.
It’s not hyperbole to suggest that this change could spell the death of digital journalism.
What Do Google’s AI Changes Mean for News Sites?
In a recent report from TechCrunch, it was revealed that as soon as next week, Google will roll out a reimagined ‘intelligent search box’ feature, eradicating the search results you’ve been used to seeing for the last couple of decades. It’s an upgrade (of sorts) over the existing method, which returns a box populated with AI spiel, before pivoting into a traditional ‘list of links’.
From next Tuesday, Google will throw users headfirst into a fully AI-powered ‘interactive experience’ that offers conversational search results, prompts deeper and more contextualized content, and even builds follow-up queries to push that search further, retaining users for longer.
It’ll answer questions, provide guides, satisfy curiosity, and deliver critical stories, all via artificial intelligence.
New ‘information agents’ can work proactively to gather information for a Google user based on their desires. That means they’ll get the latest news, updates, and informational tidbits delivered via AI before they even know they need to search for it.
And all of this happens without users offering a single click to the publishers providing this information.
These information agents will land this summer, but the AI-powered Search changes will appear as soon as next week, with Google soaking up feedback and refining the function over time. At this point, it’s worth stressing that none of these concepts are novel, but they are evolving to a point of no return for digital journalism.
Google’s Head of Search, Liz Reid, explained how the agent system will work:
You could send an alert to track market movements in a particular sector with very specific parameters, and the agent will map out a monitoring plan for you, including the tools and the data it needs to access — like our real-time finance data.
And it will then keep track of those changes and let you know when the conditions are met, and provide a synthesized update with links and information you can dive into further.
For gaming, let’s imagine an agent that goes away and searches for the most timely updates on everything tied to ARC Raiders. The very next time Embark Studios publishes some kind of patch notes or social breakdown, the AI agent will run off, grab it, compile it to suit your needs, and deliver it in a matter of seconds, offering further contextualization, thought pieces, and forward links.
In other words, it effectively eradicates much of what we do as an independent outlet, breaking down the key parts of an update, letting you know what this means for you as a gamer, offering critical guides to help you with new quests and changes, and feeding our opinions into the cacophony of the gaming space.
But the kicker here is that Google will almost exclusively procure this information from sites like Insider Gaming, as we’ll keep producing this content (you can bet your last dollar on that), but it’ll deliver no traffic in exchange for that information.
This is the long and short of how so many sites have crumbled under the strain of SEO-related changes over the last couple of years.
The Numbers Represent the Risk
The TechCrunch breakdown reveals some disheartening numbers.
According to Google, more than 2.5 billion users a month use the AI Overviews feature, which drops a box at the top of your search results, pulling together key information from the top-rated sources. The conversational search mode, which allows users to use an AI agent to further their results or tweak queries on the fly, has 1 billion monthly users.
Reid spoke further about how these changes will impact the average user leaning on Search for their content:
Search can build custom experiences just for your individual questions, from dynamic layouts, interactive visuals to persistent and stateful project spaces that you can return to again and again.
TechCrunch put it perfectly:
Combined, these changes will likely further decimate Google referrals to publishers, which have already been suffering from declining referrals due to AI Overviews. This has put some ad-dependent media operations out of business, and now things will likely get worse.
What’s worse is that the changes are arriving so quickly, leaving publishers no time to pivot or adapt their processes to cope with the impending, inherent risk of Google’s evolution.
And of course, it all comes down to dollars and cents. It was stated at the end of the report that Google’s CEO is focusing on this model being efficient, fast, and providing results ‘at a lower price’.
This drive is part of Google’s push to make AI much more accessible, but it comes at a drastic cost. Independent publishers like Insider Gaming rely heavily on Google’s mechanics to drive traffic. This is no big secret, and it’s why so many outlets rely on guide content, SEO-focused pieces, and trends to stay afloat.
With Google effectively usurping that content and giving nothing back to the websites publishing it, a dire situation will start to emerge, worse still than it has been over the last 12 months or so.
I will stress that this is one of the most critical reasons why Insider Gaming offers so much to you, our reader. We have our diversification that covers guides, esports, and tech-focused content, and we have bolstered our review offerings in the last few months.
