God of War: Laufey was officially revealed during the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, closing out the showcase with more than 20 minutes of gameplay footage. While rumors had pointed to its existence beforehand, the reveal still came as a surprise to many fans.
The game marks a significant departure from Kratos’ Norse saga, shifting the spotlight to Faye, also known as Laufey. While some may view it as a fresh start for the franchise, new comments from lead actress Deborah Ann Woll suggest the project has been part of Santa Monica Studio’s plans for far longer than anyone expected.
God Of War Laufey Was Seemingly Always The Plan
Speaking with Comic Games Magazine, Woll reflected on finally being able to discuss the game publicly after keeping it under wraps for so long.
‘I’ve known about this for nearly ten years,’ Woll said, explaining how difficult it had been to stay silent about the project ahead of its reveal.
According to Woll, the God of War: Laufey was first pitched to her in 2018, the same year God of War launched, though she added that the concept had already been established internally before then.
Woll recalled that when head of creative Cory Barlog brought her in to discuss Ragnarök, he already had artwork for God of War: Laufey displayed in his office. The poster reportedly featured both Faye and the mysterious new companion character, Phranque.
Phranque, the sentient gelatinous cube introduced during the game’s reveal, quickly became one of the showcase’s most talked-about surprises. While some fans assumed the character was simply comic relief, Woll revealed that Phranque has been part of the project’s vision from the very beginning and is “deeply a part of the lore.”
How that presents itself in the overarching narrative remains to be seen, but it’s obvious that some serious background planning has gone into the franchise, and some fans think it could even be coming out soon. Check out the trailer below for a reminder of what’s next for God of War.
