The God of War franchise isn’t finished with Kratos, Santa Monica has confirmed, following the reveal of God of War: Laufey in the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play.
Fresh from two spectacular Norse-themed titles, Santa Monica is continuing the story with a spin-off centered around Faye, Kratos’ wife, and her death at the start of Ragnarok.
Faye’s adventure sees her enter the afterlife of the Gods, coming face-to-face with deities from a variety of pantheons, but the switch to Kratos’ wife does not mean the story of the God of War has finished.
Kratos Will Return in God of War
In an interview published on YouTube after the God of War: Laufey reveal, Santa Monica boss Cory Barlog made it clear that Kratos is here to stay, though he’s excited to tell a story elsewhere on the “larger tapestry” of the overarching story being told.
“It’s exciting. Faye is, while it’s a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore, all these different characters in there. But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.”
In a follow-up on X, the official account of Sony Santa Monica teased “many more stories” will be told with Kratos, which, although not surprising given he is the face of the franchise, will appease those who have not been impressed by the spin-off title.
Social media discourse has come to a head following the Laufey reveal, with even Domino’s Pizza taking a swipe at the approach, though the general consensus of fans is excitement for what’s on the agenda.
A game set in the afterlife of the Gods also allows the God of War franchise to feature a wider variety of pantheons that may overwise have been overlooked, with the reveal footage already highlighting the appearance of Sekhmet, the Egyptian Goddess of War, and Begyse, a Buddhist War Deity.
