Square Enix discusses the future direction of Final Fantasy remakes and whether they will feature the same extensive overhauls and expansions as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
Final Fantasy 7’s remake trilogy made significant changes to the original 1997 release. It has been expanded into three games, with the final installment scheduled for release in 2027. Additionally, the remake introduced new lore and transformed the game from a traditional RPG into an open-world action experience. Now, Square Enix has commented on whether future remakes of classic games in the franchise will take the same approach or stick to a more traditional remastering strategy.
Square Enix Discusses the Future of Final Fantasy Remakes
In a translated answer from the Q&A section of the recent shareholders’ meeting on June 24, 2026, Square Enix says each Final Fantasy remake will take a unique approach based on player expectations and modern gaming trends.
“As part of our market-in approach, we engage in trial and error to establish what is best for contemporary customers based on current market needs and trends. In doing so, it is extremely important to us that we strike the right balance between our approach and the expectations of players who loved the original works. While specific titles may call for specific mechanics, we will continue our development efforts by assessing what truly resonates within the current market environment for both original titles and new remakes.“
