Fable Survived This Long Because It’s ‘Vital’ To XBOX

Fable’s director has discussed how the game being vital to XBOX’s platform DNA helped with its longer development cycle.

The next major game for Xbox is undoubtedly Fable, and a lot is riding on it due to the legacy of the previous installments. Playground Games, known for the highly popular Forza series, is working on the reboot, and the title has gone through multiple delays already. The developers have recently addressed the lengthy development cycle for the upcoming title.

Fable Director Says the Title is ‘Important to Video Games as a Whole’

Spotted by Eurogamer, during a new interview with The Guardian, Fable director Ralph Fulton discussed the game’s long development cycle. Fulton believes Fable is an important title, and that “so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform,” which helped protect them during the longer development cycle. Fulton also said the upcoming title is “important to video games as a whole” because it includes elements that don’t exist anywhere else.

The director also spoke about how they have stuck the landing with the upcoming title. Ralph Fulton stated that the team has “relentlessly pursued quality” and “it culminates in a choice that really challenges you to think about who you are, with a real personal cost to weigh against the outcome.”

Fulton also discussed how Fable made him think about games more deeply than he has on anything else, and how “there was a little bit of pride in proving” Playground Games can deliver the title in a different genre. However, they didn’t want to stray too far, and even though Fable doesn’t have cars, the open-world element is an area where the developers have “transferable skills”.
