EWC 2026 CS2 LCQ Preview: Liquid, s1mple, Heroic & 100 Thieves Look to Transform Their Seasons

The Esports World Cup Counter-Strike 2 tournament is set to start on August 12, with the event closing the seven-week gaming festival on August 23. Before then, the final four teams will be decided for the 32-team $2,000,000 event in the LCQ starting on August 7.

Insider Gaming has a look at the Last Chance Qualifier for the Esports World Cup 2026 CS2 Tournament, a tournament that could decide the fate of the season for several rosters.

EWC Counter-Strike 2 Last Chance Qualifier Teams

The EWC LCQ features a whopping 64 teams in GSL Groups, followed by a 32-team single-elimination playoff bracket, where four teams will progress. All matches are Best of 3.

Names to look out for include Team Liquid and their Stake Pulse Beat I conquerors Apogee, as well as Fnatic, BIG, HEROIC, NRG, 100 Thieves, BC.Game, and the newly formed 1w team.

Why is the Esports World Cup Counter-Strike 2 tournament important?

It’s no secret that the Counter-Strike tournament at the Esports World Cup has struggled to attract the same interest and prestige that other tournaments have gathered.

Despite that, organizations may be looking at the Esports World Cup tournament as the most vital tournament of their year for multiple reasons.

First of all, the prize pool of the main tournament is now set at $2,000,000, making it the single largest prize pool in the 2026 circuit.

Additionally, the tournament feeds into the EWC Club Championship, which distributes $30,000,000 based on organizational placement across the seven weeks of events.

Financially, the event is highly lucrative to the financial health of several organizations, especially after the faltering sticker sales of the IEM Cologne 2026 Major, but why should fans care?

Well, if you want to see your team at the PGL Singapore Major in December, there’s a high likelihood that their path to the Major relies on this tournament.

EWC 2026 will be the last big event before the September VRS snapshot, which will dictate the invites for tournaments that then decide the final ranking before the November 2 VRS deadline for the Major.

Essentially, for the teams just outside of the current invite bubble, EWC 2026 will be the make-or-break event that will decide whether there is a pathway to the Major for several rosters, or whether they will be stuck outside of Tier 1 for the foreseeable future.

That is especially true for the teams starting in the LCQ. The event is set to be covered by HLTV, making it VRS eligible. With a $100,000 prize pool attributed to the event, even the qualifier has more money involved than most Tier 2/3 events, making it hugely valuable for the VRS rankings.

A dream run in Paris has the chance to bring a roster from total obscurity to the brink of a Major invite.
