Embark Studios has taken an all-important step towards facilitating a particular audience by adding PvE content to The Finals, the arena shooter launched in 2023. The first-person shooter now has bot matches, in which players can fight tooth and nail against intelligent AI-driven enemies, which is the hallmark of a PvE-based experience.
Unfortunately, this update has dropped as much of the ARC Raiders community, those folks backing the studio’s extraction adventure title, has been calling out for a PvE mode, map condition, or server switch. Bizarrely, it’s the competitive first-person shooter that received PvE content before the extraction title.
The Finals Has PvE, But ARC Raiders Probably Never Will
If you’re any kind of ARC Raiders fan, you’ll easily recognize the debate concerning PvE content in the game. The extraction title has only been on the market for around nine months, but it has already found more than its fair share of problems. One leading concern is the lack of PvE-focused content in the game, which a fair portion of the community has been requesting for the longest time.
Embark Studios has outright refused to add any PvE content to the core experience, suggesting that the inherent risk of PvP feeds into the natural, emergent gameplay they seek to accommodate in ARC Raiders.
But the competitive, PvP-exclusive The Finals now has a PvE-based mode, allowing players to fight bots.
It seems strange that The Finals, which wasn’t even in the PvE debate, has received a bot-based mode, while ARC Raiders, which has thousands of people begging for PvE content, is left out in the cold.
Embark has made it clear that they don’t intend to bring PvE to the platform soon, but they’re testing a PvE-focused map condition in China. That’s a separate version of the game, though, so it’s not guaranteed it’ll be replicated in the ‘Western’ market.
In The Finals, the PvE content, combined with everything else added or improved in the eleventh season, pushed the game to the highest peak player count it has managed to secure in ten months. Many think that ARC Raiders would see a similar jump in player count if Embark Studios added PvE content.
The team explained in a blog post how the bot function works in The Finals:
Select Cashout (Bots) from the play screen and queue solo, as a party of up to three, or matchmake to team up with other players and take on the bots together.
Bot matches use the full Cashout format, so you’ll enter a three-round tournament. You’ll also earn progress, at a reduced rate, toward the World Tour, the Battle Pass, and other progression systems!
These bot opponents are the real deal. They navigate THE FINALS’ highly dynamic environments, cause destruction, and wield a limited array of Weapons, Gadgets, and Specializations, offering the Cashout experience in a space built for learning. If you’ve ever tried THE FINALS and struggled to find your footing, Cashout Bots is a great place to jump back in.
Cashout Bots are available in Monaco, Bernal, Kyoto, Las Vegas and SYS$Horizon for now.
And this is just the start for bots! These bots are in beta. Expect occasional bugs and odd behavior as they grow. Bots in THE FINALS need to make incredibly complex calculations and will take time to perfect. Make sure to share your experiences with the team!
That’s exactly how I’d imagine bots would work in ARC Raiders. If the team went full PvE, they could have AI-controlled Raiders roaming the map. Otherwise, if they did a PvE-lite mode, they could keep other players in the raid, but they’d not be able to damage other players.
Admittedly, the latter solution isn’t ideal, as it totally disrupts immersion and strips away the grounded and somewhat realistic vibe of the extraction shooter.
