The dreaded day has finally arrived, as Destiny 2 has received its final ever update, with the Monument of Triumph. Fans have turned up in droves to bid farewell to the game, and in doing so, they’ve already smashed Marathon’s peak player count, with the number still rapidly rising.
The influx of players has been so significant that many fans attempting to track the milestone found SteamDB struggling to keep up, with the site seemingly going down altogether!
Battle Of The Player Counts
According to SteamDB, Marathon’s peak player count was just over 88,000, but at the time of writing, Destiny 2’s is over 100,000, and still rapidly climbing—at least, until it crashed.
With Marathon Season 2 just kicking off, as well as coming off the back of a free week, Destiny 2’s player count tells the story that there’s a much higher demand for Destiny, as more questions pour in over Bungie’s decision to kill the game—and shift its focus to Marathon instead.
The goal was always to slam the servers of Destiny 2 with its final update, as fans aim to send a message to both Sony and Bungie that they aren’t done with the Destiny franchise. In fact, a petition was even made, which reached over 350,000 signatures, calling for the development of Destiny 3, since the sequel is seemingly nowhere in sight.
With the player count of Destiny 2 today, as well as the general call for Destiny 3 to be made, it’s blatant that fans aren’t ready to say goodbye. Unfortunately, that decision isn’t up to the fans, or even the hundreds of developers at Bungie, and until a new project is greenlit, all fans can do is enjoy the final state of Destiny 2.
That said, saying goodbye hasn’t been easy. In fact, as if it couldn’t get any more difficult, the new home screen for Destiny is literally a sun setting under the title card—it couldn’t be any more on the nose.
