CD PROJEKT has announced on social media that, as of today, Cyberpunk 2077 has managed to sell a whopping 40 million copies. This huge milestone comes as the team is piecing together the sequel, and when breaking the news, they stated how CP2077 created a ‘great foundation’ for these upcoming projects.

These sales milestones make us look back at how the game launched. It’s no big secret that the game was in a terrible condition when it hit the market in 2020, but many now consider it the most ambitious rags-to-riches story in gaming history.

Cyberpunk 2077 Has Sold 40 Million Copies

When it launched almost six years ago, Cyberpunk 2077 was in a horrific state. It was one of the buggiest releases we’d ever seen, and that came after years of promotion and teasers. It was one of the most disappointing drops in recent history, and it remains an indelible mark on CD PROJEKT’s history.

But what’s more important isn’t how bad it was, but how great it became.

Thanks to the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars, Cyberpunk 2077 was able to turn things around and eventually become known as one of the greatest games ever made. It’s now a staple of the gaming space, and it’s a title that everyone should at least try.

Everything from the game’s immersive story to the marvellous world of Night City was eventually realized as it should have been at launch, but it took a titanic effort to get it there. For a while, CD PROJEKT’s fortunes seemed lost, and investors even raised lawsuits because of the poor delivery of this gargantuan game.

The arrival of Phantom Liberty in 2023, the game’s first and only expansion, was the icing on the cake. It boasted a solid cast, brilliant acting, a phenomenal story, and a heart-crushing ending that etched it in the annals of DLC history as one of the best expansions ever made.

Ultimately, Cyberpunk 2077 became a multimedia marvel, going on to spawn other games (now in development), an anime, and a die-hard community with the utmost dedication to the universe CDPR created.

Now, six years later, the title has managed to sell a whopping 40 million copies, which is indicative of the power of that turnaround mission.
