Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s Kill Block Mode Features More Than 500 Map Configurations

Activision has revealed new details on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s new multiplayer experience, Kill Block, confirming the mode will launch with more than 500 different map configurations created through a modular battlefield system.

The mode will be shown publicly for the first time at Fanatics Fest in New York City this weekend.

What is Modern Warfare 4’s Kill Block?

Kill Block takes place inside the West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility, where maps are assembled from three interchangeable sections that are reconfigured between matches. The result is a different battlefield each time players load into a game, forcing teams to constantly adapt their strategies instead of memorizing traditional map layouts.

Unlike standard multiplayer maps, Kill Block is built using two “End Slabs” and one “Central Slab.” These sections combine to form what Activision calls a “Combo,” with each slab featuring its own layout, sightlines, cover positions, and traversal routes. While the overall footprint remains roughly the size of Modern Warfare (2019)’s Shoot House, swapping individual slabs dramatically changes how each match plays.

Some of the available slabs are entirely new environments, while others draw inspiration from classic Call of Duty locations. Players will encounter sections based on Crash, Shoot House, Storage Town, Killhouse, and Ambush, though each appears alongside different neighboring environments, creating fresh tactical situations even for veteran players.

The adaptive environments extend beyond layout changes. Certain slabs include dynamic weather effects such as rain and snow, temporarily reducing visibility and even affecting weapon appearances with water or ice accumulation. Maps are also filled with interactive elements including destructible doors, vertical routes, and multiple sightlines designed to encourage movement and experimentation.

Kill Block will debut alongside an expanded version of Gunfight when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23. In addition to the returning 3v3 Gunfight mode, Activision is introducing a new 10v10 Gunfight variant. Matches use randomized shared loadouts instead of custom classes, and after every two rounds, the map reconfigures into a completely new Combo while players receive another randomized weapon set. The first team to win six rounds claims victory.

Although Gunfight will be the primary way to experience Kill Block at launch, Activision says the modular battlefield has been engineered to support additional core multiplayer modes in future post-launch seasons.

Outside of Kill Block, Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer offering will include 12 core maps at launch, with two additional maps arriving shortly afterward. The game will also feature Ground War, Hardcore playlists, Party Modes, and returning staples such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
