Blizzard Could Sell StarCraft IP to NEXON

NEXON already boasts an incredible catalog of both developed and published games, but the Korean company is reportedly eyeing up one of Blizzard’s longest-running IPs—StarCraft.

StarCraft continues to be one of the most popular games on the planet, despite its lack of regular releases over the last 30 years. A new report suggests that NEXON is looking to capitalize on the game’s popularity in the Korean market by owning the IP outright, which could have juicy implications for the game’s future.

Could we Finally Get StarCraft 3?

According to an exclusive story by Chosun (translated):

“Nexon is pushing to acquire content development rights using the IP (intellectual property) of the real-time strategy game ‘StarCraft’ from the American game company Blizzard. Although nearly 30 years have passed since its release, StarCraft still maintains a ranking around the top 10 most popular games in Korean PC.

A senior industry official stated on the 2nd, ‘The StarCraft IP contract between Nexon and Blizzard is on the verge of being finalized.’ He also said, “Once this contract is completed, Nexon will hold the development rights related to the sequel to StarCraft.”

What a monstrous deal this is in prospect.

Firstly, I think it’s more than ok to suggest that NEXON would have every intention of developing a third mainline game. It’s been 16 years since StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty was released, and some would argue this is a tad too long since the last major release.

True, we’ve had Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, Nova Covert Ops, and StarCraft: Remastered in that time, but you can’t beat the idea of StarCraft 3!
