Black Flag Resynced Reviews Falter as Microtransaction Drama Surfaces

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is out today, and already, gamers worldwide have found something to complain about. Over on Steam, the game’s review sentiments are struggling, and earlier today, the rating dropped to ‘Mostly Negative’. It has managed to recover somewhat as the hours have pushed on, but it’s still not good.

There are two leading reasons why Black Flag Resynced is getting bad reviews on PC. First, there’s an issue that’s causing cutscenes to play out at just 30 FPS, which is a big no-no for most PC gamers. Then, there’s the drama surrounding the exorbitant number of microtransactions available for the game, which many feel they should already own.

Sell The Game, Sell The Gear

On Steam, more than 1,000 reviews have been logged for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced already, despite it only having been on the market for (at the time of writing) around 19 hours. Unfortunately, many of those reviews are negative.

But why?

If you give the list of reviews a cursory scan, you’ll see plenty of people complaining about the frame-rate lock that exists in cutscenes, but that’s not the number-one issue with Black Flag Resynced.

The chief driver of bad press is the sheer volume of microtransactions in the store attached to Black Flag. There’s almost $90 worth of microtransactions associated with Black Flag Resynced, from ship customization packs to character packs.

Fans are complaining that these cosmetics should have been included in the Deluxe Edition of the game, which cost a little more and came with some additional content, just not this content.

Even the ‘map pack’ that players can buy for a few dollars, which reveals certain locations of treasures in the game, many feel should have been included in the Deluxe Edition.

Folks are complaining because Black Flag Resynced boasts a premium price tag, and then Ubisoft has gone and forced microtransactions down their throat. That’s despite these very packs having been available (mostly) since the original game was released in 2013.

Elsewhere, Black Flag Resynced is doing just fine in the review stakes. For instance, we gave it a score of 8/10 in our review.
