INTERVIEW: Dying Light: The Beast’s Director Isn’t Sure If Every Secret Has Been Found

Dying Light: The Beast has been on the market for an entire year. That time has flown by, and in the months that followed the game’s launch, Techland worked to flesh out the base offering and diversity of the game. Most recently, the Restored Land update dropped, giving players the ability to completely rid the map of the undead hordes.

I sat down with Nathan Lemaire, The Beast’s game director, to discuss one year of the game, reminisce on the many updates the game has received, and to see what’s coming next for Dying Light. During our discussion, we started talking about The Beast’s many secrets, and Nathan admitted that even he might not know what they all are.

Secrets on Secrets

Dying Light: The Beast has scores of easter eggs and hidden secrets, from nods to the universe’s lore to mysterious weapons and special characters. The community loves these elements, and as soon as the game hit the market in September 2025, they set about digging around every nook and cranny to uncover them.

The most intriguing secret required players to collect nondescript branches along a river, compile them, and unlock a hidden safe zone, which, if they slept in it, they’d be introduced to a zombified ‘Bober’ character.

Another required players to knock on a storage cabinet 77 times before it would open up and present them with a unique weapon.

When I was talking to Nathan Lemaire, the game’s director, one of the questions I asked concerned those secrets. I wanted to know: has everything been found?

I think so. I think everything has been found, but to be transparent, I’m not sure if I know everything!

I think everything has been found.

Lemaire went on to celebrate the first anniversary with me by revealing what’s coming (more on that to follow!). It was a trip down an admittedly rather short memory lane:

When Dying Light: The Beast released, we were super thrilled about the reception. It’s the highest-rated Dying Light title. Right now, as it stands, we are seeing very positive Steam reviews… We were so happy with the release.

It proves that we managed to do what we wanted to do, which was delivering a comeback for Kyle Crane. It was both us coming back to the roots of Dying Light while also delivering a step forward for the franchise.

The post-launch content, which includes the likes of new game plus, ‘Legend’ levels, and, as mentioned, Restored Land, only furthered Techland’s confidence in The Beast. Internally, it had long since become known as ‘Dying Light 3’, the former franchise director once told me.

Talking about Restored Land specifically, Lemaire explained how it came about:

There are a lot of things we can do (with Dying Light) at Techland. It’s our playground, and it’s super interesting.

We started working on (Restored Land) after the release. We wanted to try another take on our game, make it more survival, be more connected to Kyle and the loot.

When we added the permanent population, with zombies not respawning, we saw the potential with that super quickly with the prototype. The fact that I think I’m literally clearing the land is very cool. We doubled down on it.

Dying Light: The Beast remains one of my top-rated games of 2025. When I reviewed it, I gave it the highest grade possible, and I stand by that a year later!
