It’s hardly a huge secret that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be the biggest game of the year… Or rather, the biggest game of the century. But when you get into the implications of the game’s imminent success, you start to uncover knock-on effects that send ripples of positivity across the wider gaming space.
In a recent Global Games Report from Newzoo, a leading analytics firm, it was revealed just how powerful Grand Theft Auto 6 will be – and how powerful it already is. There are bold estimations in store, but one of the most remarkable revelations is that, without Grand Theft Auto 6 launching, console sales would plummet.
Grand Theft Auto 6 Will Move Consoles
GTA 6, which is hitting the market on November 19th, could potentially be the fastest-selling game of all time. It has the potential to rack up a billion dollars in sales in one day, dwarfing the performance of 2013’s Grand Theft Auto 5.
In an all-new report from Newzoo, GTA 6’s pulling power was revealed as going beyond simple software sales. It’s summed up perfectly by Newzoo’s experts in a single line:
Without GTA 6, console revenues would decline year over year, as publishers restructure calendars around the release. GTA 6 also carries cannibalization risk for titles around its November 2026 window.
Additionally, GTA 6’s release is ‘expected to broadly lift console revenue’ and full-game spending. This is represented by the success already seen by GTA 5, which has shifted a quarter of a billion copies in the last decade-and-a-bit.
The folks at Newzoo said that GTA 6 ‘anchors’ the entire year, and the game has already managed to top the ‘adventure’ genre on console platforms in the revenue stakes based on pre-order estimates alone.

Elsewhere, the game is expected to take the form of a major ‘catalyst’ this year, reaccelerating console player growth and converting ‘players into spenders and spurring Gen-9 adoption.’
Grand Theft Auto 6’s recent gameplay reveal was Netflix’s biggest ‘show’ ever, pulling in tens of millions of viewers within a matter of hours. In the days following the drop, content creators who had an exclusive opportunity to preview GTA 6 behind closed doors in Scotland started uploading videos exploring the game’s intricacies.
