Arma Reforger turned heads when it launched in early access in 2022, but for the wrong reasons. It was not in good shape, and it took more than a year for Bohemia Interactive to bring it back to life. Today, it’s a pure representation of what can happen when a development team undertakes a full, operational reset, and it has been ‘saved’ by the company’s best efforts.
However, one glaring hole in Arma Reforger is the lack of single-player content. It’s a multiplayer-only title, which means solo players can sometimes feel like they’ve been left out in the cold. Recently, during a talk at Gamescom Dev, that very topic came up, and it was up to the franchise’s executive producer to make some promises for what comes next.
‘We Do Remember Our Full DNA’
During a talk at Gamescom Dev, Executive Producer at Bohemia Interactive, Natalia Agafonova, set the story straight about the immense turnaround that brought Arma Reforger back to life after a harrowing early access launch.
It took a retooling of everything at the studio, from how they handled the new game engine to how they interacted with junior developers as a leadership team. The revitalization of the studio facilitated the resurgence of Arma Reforger, and here we are today, awaiting Arma 4, the next step in the milsim series.
In the Q&A portion of the talk at Gamescom Dev, one member of the audience asked what the future is for single-player content. They admitted they’ve been playing Arma since the series debuted two decades ago, but they didn’t buy Arma Reforger because it has no single-player content.
Agafonova explained:
We had to set a realistic challenge, because Arma Reforger is a staircase. It’s a step towards our next big instalment, which will be Arma 4, and we chose to focus on a smaller subset of what makes Arma Arma.
In general, Arma is four things: multiplayer, single-player, the editor, and modding.
Those four things are a lot, and when we were developing the engine we focused on the stuff that needs the most technological advancement for Arma Reforger, just to test the engine. So, we focused on modability and multiplayer, with editor and single-player being left for the next big instalment, Arma 4.
That’s why we didn’t put it in the first game, because we had to release it sooner to test the engine.
But stay tuned, we do remember our full DNA, and Arma 4 is coming.
As an important pillar of what makes Arma 4 worthy of the brand identity, single-player will undoubtedly play a big part in what’s to come. In recent years, PvE-style games – or modes in games – have found increasing levels of success. In some cases, PvP-focused titles often face backlash for not having PvE offerings to serve that portion of the audience.
Do you hope the single-player portion of Arma 4 is substantial, or are you not fussed about whether it lands or not? Let us know on the Insider Gaming Discord server.
