A new report has revealed that the next mainline Horizon game from Guerrilla Games is still “years away” from completion, with the studio having spent much of its resources on the upcoming multiplayer title, Horizon Hunters Gathering.
However, the online action game, which was announced in February, is reportedly being overhauled following negative feedback from playtests. Guerrilla is said to be shifting the project toward a more traditional co-op multiplayer experience, with a smaller scope and its live-service elements being removed.
No Single-Player Horizon In The Near Future
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier broke the news about Horizon Hunters Gathering’s overhaul, with the project’s reported changes once again highlighting Sony’s struggles with its live-service ambitions.
However, Schreier also provided an update on Guerrilla’s wider development plans, revealing that the majority of the studio had been working on Hunters Gathering. As a result, only a “tiny team” had begun work on the next single-player Horizon game.
The project then won’t be in full-scale production yet, meaning it remains “years away from completion.” Schreier reiterated the point on Bluesky, stating:
As I’ve reported in the past, almost all of Guerrilla Games has been working on Horizon Hunters Gathering for the last few years, and the next mainline single-player Horizon game is still far, far away.
Horizon Hunters Gathering isn’t the only project in development, either: an MMORPG titled Horizon Steel Frontiers is scheduled for release next year, and a Horizon movie is also said to be in the works.
So, while there are plenty of Horizon projects on the cards, those of you hoping to return to the franchise’s expansive single-player world may have a much longer wait ahead.
