On August 20th, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl’s 2.0 update will land alongside the Cost of Hope expansion, the game’s first major story DLC that expands The Zone immeasurably. Fans have been pondering over the 2.0 update for some time, wondering exactly what it will include and understandably building their wishlists as the drop date draws near.
Well, GSC Game World has just unveiled everything coming in STALKER 2’s 2.0 update, and while it’s important, it might not be as deep as you were hoping for an update as major as ‘2.0’. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about this patch.
Visuals, A-Life, Engine, and Weapons
The beating heart of the 2.0 update is centered around the general improvement of STALKER 2. That means lighting has been enhanced, both in The Zone and in the many buildings that inhabit the region. From the tallest towers to the deepest, darkest underground bunkers, every corner of STALKER 2 has been overhauled when it comes to lighting and ambience.
Fog now shrouds The Zone on occasion, and it’s not just a cosmetic change. This new, suffocating weather element will hinder your enemies’ vision and listening abilities, and it makes The Zone feel like something out of Silent Hill, which is nice for those who like a sense of trepidation in their exploration.
Additionally, landscaping and foliage have been reworked by GSC Game World to look ‘more natural’, and as you can imagine, hundreds of bug fixes related to the environment have been delivered.
A-Life, the game’s yet-to-be-delivered-in-full AI engine, now simulates more believable behavior, with GSC having added more miscellaneous points of interest across the world for characters to interact with. There’s also more persistence with this upgrade, and certain AI-driven bugs have been patched out, such as the ones that allowed mutants to attack through walls and floors.
Customization is another key element of the 2.0 update, and players can now use custom rulesets to fully tweak the world around them. If you want easy human fights but gruesome and challenging mutant fights, you’re free to do just that. If you want loads of loot but also heaps of punishing anomalies, then go at it.
Or, if you want mutants, people, The Zone, the economy, and every other element of the game to be easy as pie, then off you go.
The much-talked-about addition of binoculars lands with 2.0, giving players three sets to choose from (once purchased from traders), and there is a range of new weapons to play with:
- Arev AR
- GP3A DMR
- SKP DMR
- Fora-230 SMG
Those who like to track their stats can now do just that with a fresh tab in the PDA that counts every element of your STALKER 2 journey: favourite weapon, bolts thrown, total kills, anomalies interacted with, and so on. It’s a small thing, but it’s a quality-of-life improvement nonetheless.
In the open world, players will also encounter more ‘localized’ mutants, such as Fleshes and Bloodsuckers. They’ll look and behave differently based on their surroundings and the biome they inhabit. Again, not a huge change, but another arrow in the 2.0 quiver.
And, of course, 2.0 is welcoming the addition of Cost of Hope, the game’s first major expansion. This is the most important thing to take away from this entire update, as while the delivery of improvements is part and parcel of pleasing the community, the introduction of Cost of Hope marks a major step forward for GSC Game World.
It’s not a monumental update, but it is a fair chunk of content and optimization upgrades that players should be happy with.
