New PS5 Consoles Include Small Print Confirming Change to Digital Over Disc

PlayStation 5 owners and the gaming community in general are still reeling from Sony’s decision to go fully digital and put the era of physical discs behind us. However, if you’ve been clinging onto the minute possibility of the mammoth corporation changing its mind, it’s definitely not.

Scrapping physical discs is a huge call and comes within months of PS5 price hikes and possible PS Plus cost increases.

The ‘Don’t Kill The Disc’ was the first real sign of fightback from gamers, and I think some of us have had a hard time accepting this decision, but a new observation shows Sony is not budging.

As highlighted by Reddit user Epsilon123, it appears PS5 console boxes now feature an updated message, signaling Sony’s intent.

Under an ‘Important Notice’ sticker, the boxes now say this:

‘From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.’

Sadly, it doesn’t look like AI, or like it’s been photoshopped, and it’s probably the final nail in the coffin for officially physical media on PS5.
