Bethesda Game Studios has posted a massive update on social media regarding the entire operations at the company, touching on Starfield, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls. The Fallout portion of the update confirms that Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are being remastered, and that Obsidian is working on a new Fallout title.
It also confirms that Fallout 5 is in pre-production and that, next year, Fallout 3 is getting a prequel expansion within Fallout 76, dubbed Raven Rock. The team stressed that Fallout 76 ‘continues to be home to millions of players’, and the title has recently surpassed 35 million sales.
Fallout 3 Prequel Coming to Fallout 76
In a post on social media, Bethesda Game Studios confirmed that Fallout 3 will be getting a prequel, and that it’ll be housed entirely within Fallout 76, the post-apocalyptic MMORPG that has been on the market since 2018.
The team wrote:
We have a major Fallout 76 expansion planned for next year: Raven Rock, a prequel story to Fallout 3.
For those not in the know, Raven Rock is an important site in the Fallout universe, a military base that housed a major chapter of the Enclave, the mysterious government agency that sought to control the world even after the end of all things.
It’s the home of President John Henry Eden, and players explore the site in Fallout 3. It’s primarily used as a massive manufacturing facility for machines like vertibirds and equipment like power armor. In terms of the timeline, Fallout 76 is set in 2102, at which time the Raven Rock installation was well and truly operational.
This won’t be the first time that a Fallout 76 expansion has taken players to the world of Fallout 3. In September 2022, Bethesda Game Studios added an out-of-map expansion called The Pitt, taking players back to the location of the same name that they might have visited in the iconic Fallout 3 expansion.
This news comes weeks after I sat down with Bethesda at Summer Game Fest and learned about their intention to ‘thicken’ the base map in Fallout 76, but also to make these out-of-map expansions, known as Expeditions, feel more meaningful for players.
