Fallout 5 is coming, but it won’t be ready anytime soon. In an update on the state of the studio following the layoffs at Xbox on July 6, Bethesda director Todd Howard provided some clarity on what’s going on with the next installment of the franchise.
Howard calls Fallout one of the studio’s biggest priorities, with Fallout 5 being a “long-range destination”. There are at least four Fallout projects in the works, but when it comes to Fallout 5, that appears to be the game furthest away.
The Elder Scrolls 6 was officially announced eight years ago, but there hasn’t been much in the way of news since. That said, the game is the “primary development focus” for Bethesda.
Howard says the majority of the company is working on the upcoming game. It was also revealed that Fallout 5 is in preproduction, meaning it’s still quite a ways away. With it being so early in development, it’s all but confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 will launch before Fallout 5. When that is, however, is anyone’s guess at this point.
“With over 65 million copies sold, players are still exploring Skyrim 15 years later, but we know it’s been a very long wait for the sequel,” Howard said. “The next chapter is on the way. We’re where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day.”
Despite Fallout 5 being so early in development, players likely won’t have to wait long to revisit the Fallout universe. Howard confirmed that not only is Obsidian working on a new Fallout title, but remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development.
