Ryan Hurst, the actor cast to play Kratos in the upcoming God of War television series, will be recast after suffering a major injury on set. Per reports, Hurst tore a bicep while shooting the Prime Video-backed series, an injury disruptive enough to warrant bringing in an entirely new actor for the role.
Hurst was seen as a solid pick by fans when his role was revealed in January. It was said by those close to the production that Hurst’s injury was suffered a few weeks ago, and the performer has since undergone surgery but has too long a recovery period to resume his portrayal of Kratos, given the physicality of the role.
Who Will Play Kratos Now?
In a new report, it was surmised that Hurst might not have been fit to return to filming until early 2027, which would have been a full spanner in the works of the God of War television show. Now, fans are left to wonder who will fill Hurst’s shoes as the iconic Kratos.
Over the last few months, much of the cast of the God of War series has been revealed, uncovering a stellar line-up. From what we know, the series will follow the story of the 2018 title launched on PlayStation 4, showing an older Kratos’ journey alongside Atreus, his son, as they embark on a pilgrimage of sorts to scatter his wife’s ashes.
In January, Hurst appeared on social media to speak about landing the role, revealing jubilation and excitement about the casting:
Used to play as him. Now I get to be him. Grateful to pick up the axe, and honored by the fans who made this story legendary.
Incredibly, Amazon already renewed the Prime Video series for a second season before anything had been filmed, a revelation that arrived long before Hurst was injured on set.
