A YouTuber has posted a video of a 3D Minecraft running on a Game Boy Color.
Spotted by WindowsCentral, Game of Tobi has posted a new video on YouTube titled “REAL 3D Minecraft on the Game Boy!” and the video actually features a version of Mojang’s massively popular title running on a handheld console that released close to 30 years ago. Here’s how he made it work.
Yes, Minecraft is Running on Almost 30-Year-Old Game Boy Hardware
The latest video serves as an ode to the first video on his channel, which featured him running Minecraft on the Game Boy Advance. The video starts with the YouTuber showcasing the in-game menu, which displays the game title as ‘MINICRAFT 3D by GAMEOFTOBI’. Players have four options to choose from: open a Generated World, open a Flat World, toggle textures on or off, and continue to resume play from a saved file.
Opening a Generated World will let players experience a 3D Minecraft environment on the Game Boy Color, allowing them to break and place blocks. Players can explore this 3D world, despite the console being released two generations before hardware capable of running 3D games became available. The YouTuber has also created a Nether dimension for this world. For those focused on building, the Flat World option is preferable.
Textures can be activated, though they are somewhat limited. Another surprise revealed in the video is that a game designed for the Game Boy Color can easily run on the original Game Boy. The YouTuber Game of Tobi demonstrates a version of the game running on an earlier model of the handheld console; however, it ran at half the speed of the Game Boy Color.
The YouTuber has announced that his version of 3D Minecraft for the Game Boy Color will be released immediately. Similar to the GBA version, it will be available as a free post on Patreon. Tobi also hinted at an upcoming update for the GBA version of Minecraft towards the end of the video.
