Sony Isn’t Getting ‘Revenge’ on Bungie For Destiny Underperforming, It’s Claimed

There have been rumors and speculation for days running rampant on the internet about why Destiny isn’t continuing in any way, shape, or form. One thing that reportely can be ruled out is that this is a punishment by Sony for Bungie not living up to expectations.

Bungie‘s stock was hot for years, due to the overwhelming success of the Halo franchise. Eventually, Bungie stepped away from Halo to make Destiny, which also knocked it out of the park. Destiny 2 was a successful follow-up, and Sony decided it was time to acquire the studio and enjoy a fruitful partnership together. It hasn’t turned out this way, and it seems like Destiny could be done—maybe for good.

‘Sony Isn’t Doing This to “Punish” Bungie’

According to Paul Tassi‘s Bungie sources, ceasing new Destiny content and updates is simply down to business, rather than personal grudges or animosity:

‘This is almost entire financial, simply Destiny 2 cost more than it made. Math. Cruel math, but math. No one at Bungie has any belief this is some “revenge” idea.

It is obvious to everyone Bungie has not performed well and it is not exactly Sony’s golden child. But this idea that Sony is blaming Bungie for Concord and all the rest of the live stuff is a huge reach. Sony isn’t doing this to “punish” Bungie for some transgression via its live service plans or game underperformance.

Despite atomizing Destiny 2 support to the point where there won’t even be hotfixes, there are zero plans to wind down actual servers.’

He summarizes that ‘Bungie didn’t live up to what Sony wanted’ and that’s all this is down to.

It gives Bungie a chance to focus on Marathon, which has been hemorrhaging players since launch. There are reports that Bungie is set to lose roughly 400 staff in Summer layoffs.

Not only this, but Sony has suffered a $765 million loss over Bungie.
