Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis Is Canon To Survivor Trilogy

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a remake of the 1996 original, and whilst it might have been the very beginning of Lara Craft video games, it appears that it’s not the start of her story.

Instead, the events of the game have been confirmed to occur after those of the Survivor trilogy, the franchise reboot by Crystal Dynamics. They explored Lara’s journey to becoming the adventurer we know her as today, with Legacy of Atlantis now featuring the very same Croft that was stranded on Yamatai all those years ago, just now in her ‘prime.’

Legacy Of Atlantis Continues Lara’s Story

The reveal comes from an interview with IGN, where Jeff Adams, Experience Director for Crystal Dynamics, explained how Legacy of Atlantis connects to the greater Tomb Raider mythos.

When asked whether this remake was being treated as its own independent adventure, Adams had a very definitive answer: no. He then went on to clarify where Legacy of Atlantis sits in the overarching narrative, saying:

The events of the Survivor Series did occur, and this is the same Lara, but we are finding her at this point in her career.

It’s an interesting development, and one that could open the door to further Tomb Raider continuity questions. With the events of the original Tomb Raider now found to be canon to the Survivor trilogy, would that make the next two titles in the original trilogy canon, too?

Of course, if you’ve played the original, you’ll know that it’s very much a standalone adventure, and the same seems to be the case here. Whilst the game will be in the same universe and such, you shouldn’t need to have played any of the modern reboot titles to enjoy Legacy of Atlantis, though it’ll surely add an extra layer of depth to the experience.
