During the June 2026 Nintendo Direct presentation, Square Enix announced a brand new Final Fantasy experience. Final Fantasy Resonance is a forthcoming HD-2D adventure that will release this October.

The trailer explains the game as a celebration of past games in the franchise.

Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy Resonance in HD-2D Style

“Final Fantasy returns to its roots with cinematic pixel art in a classic tale of crystals with a new twist,” the trailer boasts. You are tasked with protecting the eight crystals that sustain the world. Along the way, you will meet allies from past Final Fantasy games with classic turn-based combat. There will be new summons, and the game launches on October 22. As announced by Square Enix, the game will launch day-and-date on Nintendo Switch, Sony PlayStation 5, the XBOX Series family of consoles, and PC via Steam.

Square Enix has released several HD-2D games. The Octopath Traveler Series stands out in that art style, as does Triangle Strategy. Now, they’re able to put a new Twist on their most beloved franchise. In other Final Fantasy news, the final game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, Final Fantasy 7: Revelation, was announced during Summer Games Fest. Learn more about that here.
