The new Remedy CEO offers comments on AI and his specific viewpoint on why it won’t make game development cheaper anytime soon.
Jean-Charles Gaudechon, a former EA executive, was recently announced as the new CEO of Remedy. Taking on the role at the head of the CONTROL developer, he’s now talking about one of the most discussed topics in all of gaming, the use of AI and how it will power the future.
Remedy CEO Says AI Won’t Make Game Development Cheaper Soon
During an interview with Christopher Dring of The Game Business, Jean-Charles Gaudechon was asked whether he believes automated technology will help game development. He emphasized the importance of human creativity in Remedy’s releases and explained why he doesn’t believe AI will make game development cheaper for the foreseeable future.
“My stance is that AI is not going to make things cheaper, and it’s not going to make things cheaper for a pretty long time. People thinking, ‘Oh, we can now make games cheaper with this’, I have big question marks around that. And what types of games by the way? I said this during the earnings call, good luck trying to do Alan Wake 2 with AI. Try to use Genie and do that, and we’ll see where you land.
“But we’ve always been an R&D studio. It’s always dabbling with tech stuff. So, I’m not going to block people from doing so. But we’re going to be extremely cautious on that, never getting anywhere close to creative and anywhere close to user-facing.”
AI has been widely discussed in gaming recently. PlayStation went so far as to say that they believe AI will be powering the future of their games. They are also working closely with Bandai Namco on generative AI technology. Learn more about that here.
