PlayStation Patent Could Address Loading Screen Boredom

A new PlayStation patent has surfaced online, which aims to offer picture-in-picture content for loading screens, making wait times less boring.

We frequently see new Sony patents surface online, aimed at further innovation in the gaming space. Most recently, we saw a patent for a controller that doesn’t feature any physical buttons. We also saw a patent for AI tech that could essentially play the game for you. Now, their new target is loading screens.

PlayStation Patent Could Revive Picture-in-Picture Function

Spotted by MP1ST, the new PlayStation patent talks about offering picture-in-picture content for loading screens. The goal of these patents is to make the loading screen experience in multiplayer titles more engaging for players, allowing them to view different types of content while waiting for their matches to begin.

Players will notice a new box appearing on their loading screen while the match is in progress. This box can feature a variety of content, including videos from linked accounts and applications, AI-generated gameplay highlights, AI-generated reports about upcoming opponents, videos from social media, advertisements, gameplay tips, and more.

The patent could definitely make loading screens a lot more engaging and interesting for PlayStation players, as they will be able to interact with the content while waiting for the match to begin. However, loading screens are shorter in most games, and in half of them, matches may begin before the player can interact with the loading screen content. We will have to see how PlayStation implements this and how useful it actually is, if and when the feature is released.
