Bungie has announced that Destiny 2, which was released way back in 2017, will receive its final live-service content update next month. While the game will remain online and playable, active development is concluding, allowing Bungie to start ‘incubating’ its next games.
On June 9th, the final Destiny 2 update will drop, introducing a vast array of tweaks, quality-of-life improvements, and overhauls, fresh events, and one last hurrah with the Monument of Triumph.
Bungie is Moving on From Destiny 2
Destiny 2 won’t be taken offline next month, but the game’s final content update will arrive, representing a paradigm shift for millions of fans worldwide. In a massive blog post, the team at Bungie wrote:
On June 9, we’re aiming to deliver a collection of love letters to players across all activity types within Destiny 2. Although many were intended for future releases, we wanted to make sure you had them in this update.
Our goal is to ensure Destiny 2 can be a place you come back to and feel rewarded no matter what you play, while also having enough variety in activities to fit your mood for a given play session.
Whether you’re looking to play competitively, slay a god or two, or just spend some time exploring the destinations… there will be something for you.
With that being said, there are a few key things to call out for the future:
- A newly refreshed Director returns to the ‘center of activities’ in Destiny 2
- Pantheon 2.0 with a fresh slate of bosses to challenge
- Updates to all raid and dungeon weapons and armor
- New abilities and ability updates across all classes
- An end-to-end overhaul of Portal
- New game modes in the Crucible
- An updated rewards pass tied to the Monument of Triumph
- Sparrow Racing League returns permanently
Not everything is about additions, of course. Seasonal events are being retired, as you can imagine.
The team wrapped with a thank you to fans:
Destiny 2 has been our home for many, many years. The unknown can sometimes feel wild, even a bit scary at times, but these opportunities to explore the future are invigorating. As we look ahead, our commitment remains the same: to make games we, and you, are excited to play.
From all of us here at Bungie, we cannot thank you enough for joining us on this journey throughout the Sol system. You’ll still find us starside for years to come.
