Jensen Huang thinks all of the talk surrounding AI being the end of humanity is “complete nonsense.”
The Nvidia CEO recently sat down with Axios to talk about where AI stands today and the response from certain people about what it could mean for humanity’s future. Rather than being afraid of AI, Huang believes that people need to make sure that it’s adopted by more people.
Nvidia’s Focus Is On AI
As of publication, Nvidia sits with a market cap of $5.05 trillion, the highest of any company. It’s reached that cap, in large part, due to its focus on AI in recent years.
AI, Huang says, is “creating an enormous number of jobs” as opposed to taking them away, as many are worried about. He says that AI isn’t going to destroy everyone’s jobs, but those who utilize AI will take the jobs. What’s more, Huang believes that the doomer narrative of AI being the end of humanity and that it’ll destroy jobs is “complete nonsense”.
“I think the narrative is wrong,” he said, saying that all of the “facts” and “evidence” point to the opposite happening. “The rhetoric is wrong and hurtful. I think that the people who are talking about this, in fact, got it fundamentally wrong.”
He continued that people in and around the industry shouldn’t “create a story that is made up”.
One aspect of AI that isn’t made up is how it’s impacting consumers. Since the rise of AI and the construction of more data centers around the world, consumer costs on products such as memory and storage have risen over 400% in some instances.
Companies are ending consumer product lines, prices are expected to rise even more by the end of the year, and there are now lawsuits against manufacturers over the shortage.
Huang’s comments on AI and the negativity surrounding it aren’t new. In the past, he’s called the AI “doomer narrative” hurtful to the industry.
He can believe that, but the average person has a genuine concern with how their lives will be changed as AI continues to expand in ways people haven’t seen since the dot-com bubble of the early 2000s. Until they can see that things aren’t going to be worse off than they were before AI existed in its current state, there will always be worry.
