Netflix Wants Unhinged to Lead the Future of Interactive Stories

Netflix Games‘ narrative boss, Sean Krankel, discusses plans to follow up on “Unhinged” and the long-term goal of making Netflix the place to play narrative-driven stories.

On June 30, 2026, Netflix launched a first-person horror game, Unhinged. The game’s cast featured Sadie Sink, Zoe Kravitz, and Troy Baker. The game can be completed in less than an hour and requires players to use their phones as a controller. Now, a Netflix Games executive is discussing how the streaming juggernaut can follow up on the title’s success.

Netflix Games Exec Teases Unhinged TV or Movie Adaptation

Speaking with Christopher Dring of The Game Business, Sean Krankel, the head of storytelling at Netflix Games, discussed long-term goals for these projects, including a potential adaptation of the Unhinged IP into a Netflix film or TV series.

“It’s not just about whether we can turn this IP into a film or a TV show… which certainly is being talked about, but nothing is remotely real yet. But [we’ve found] that a phone as a controller doesn’t have to be a hindrance and can be something extremely cool and novel. And if you can deliver it to players in an elegant way that feels pretty painless, you can tell all kinds of stories,” he said.

The most important thing in Krankel’s eyes is capitalizing on the creation of a new way to interact with stories that players of all experience levels can jump into without concern for actually being able to enjoy it.

“I would love to see these experiences seeming less experimental and more natural,” Krankel said. “I would love, in a year or two, for people to be going: ‘This is naturally the place that I would go to play a story’. And that ‘playing a story’ doesn’t sound weird.”
