Souls games love to throw little spanners in the work. You’re bound to come across a locked door in the Tenryu River area of Nioh 3, and you’re not given so much as a hint on how to open it, causing even more headaches in a game that delights in inflicting them.
Curiously, there aren’t too many similar cases like this locked door in Nioh 3. Whereas other Soulslike games have you going halfway around the world to speak to an NPC to get an item to trade for another item to get the key you desire to open an obscure locked door elsewhere (this was all too familiar to read, wasn’t it?) Nioh 3’s locked doors and passageways are usually the same.
You open the door or gate from the other side, but not this particular door.
How To Open Locked Tenryu River Door In Nioh 3

You need to obtain the Dirty Key in Nioh 3 to unlock the door in the middle of Tenryu River’s village.
Shocking: A locked door needs a key.
But without any hints or direction, knowing where to go to get the key is a game within itself. Read on for full details of where the key is and how to get it.
Where To Get Dirty Key For Locked Tenryu River Door In Nioh 3

The Dirty Key is an item dropped by the Yamainu once you defeat it in the middle of Tenryu River.
The screenshot above identifies the Yokai in question that you need to slay. Even though you’ve had to come through a nasty battle with Yamagata Masakage, the Yamainu is a reality check. It doesn’t have a health bar, but it will 100% cause you an issue if you underestimate the creature.
A Yamainu is fast, hits hard, and it’s REALLY fast!
Once you do eventually best it, it drops the Dirty Key for Takechiyo to claim. Head back to the locked door and use the Dirty Key on it. You now have access to the rewards waiting within.
If you’re struggling to beat the Yamainu, you can always come back to it later. For anything else you’re struggling with in Nioh 3, let the team know through the Insider Gaming Discord Server, or leave a comment below about which guides you want to see.
