Halo: Campaign Evolved Ending Guide—All Endings and How They Compare to Combat Evolved

We’ve known forever that Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake of Combat Evolved, except for a few changes and three new missions. This does bring into question the game’s ending and how bold Halo Studios gets with it compared to the original.

Master Chief’s journey started in Halo: Combat Evolved, and we revisit it 25 years later in Halo: Campaign Evolved. Many still remember the game’s original ending, so let’s see how Halo Studios approached it this time.

How Many Endings Does Halo: Campaign Evolved Have?

There are two possible endings in Halo: Campaign Evolved, but one of them requires you to complete a pretty difficult accomplishment.

You have the default ending that 90% of players will see on their first go around. It is quite recognizable, with a slight exception.

On the other hand, there is a completely secret ending, which humorously departs from the canon ending.

How to Unlock Secret Ending in Halo: Campaign Evolved

You must beat Halo: Campaign Evolved on Legendary difficulty to see the secret ending in all of its glory.

Ready for a lot of pain and torment to see the secret ending? If not, you can see it below. But if you want to complete the Halo: Campaign Evolved trophy list, you’ll need to beat the game on Legendary difficulty, Spartan.

It’s worth it, as it involves a bonus cutscene with Sgt. Johnson, who played a big part in the prequel missions. It’s a nice touch to the OG days, it breaks the fourth wall, and confirms that more Halo Remakes are in development.

How Does Halo: Campaign Evolved Ending Compare to Halo: Combat Evolved?

Halo: Campaign Evolved’s normal ending concludes with Master Chief battling through the Covenant and the Flood at the end of the ‘Maw’ mission, escaping with Cortana, the Halo ring blowing up, and eventually a sighting of 343 Guilty Spark flying past—which is the biggest difference.

At the end of the Maw mission, you need to fight through a bunch of enemies after a long driving sequence in the Warthog. Once you reach the ship, your part in the game is done, and a cutscene ensues.

In the remake, Master Chief climbs into an open cockpit, as opposed to Combat Evolved, where he climbs into a closed ship. The exposed nature of the vehicle causes a giant Flood Hunter to grab Master Chief, who manages to evade its clutches before flying off.

Master Chief and Cortana escape to safety, and the Halo ring blows up. So far, the old and new endings are almost identical.

Dialogue ensues between the Chief and Cortana, where she claims this is the end of Halo. In Campaign Evolved, Master Chief delivers the same line: ‘No, I think we’re just getting started.’

He then begins to take off his helmet, and the camera cuts.

In Combat Evolved, it pans into space, and this is the end of the game. Whereas Campaign Evolved changes up the ending a smidge.

After Campaign Evolved pans into space, a distant object comes into view, and it’s 343 Guilty Spark! This leads us nicely into the future Halo 2 Remake.
