ArenaNet has revealed new details about Guild Wars 3’s story, introducing the Vaelwardens as the faction players will join while exploring a previously unseen period of Tyria’s history.
In a new developer blog, narrative lead Aaron Linde detailed the Orrian Golden Age, an era that takes place before the events of Guild Wars 2 when Orr was a thriving magical region rather than the destroyed land players are familiar with today.
Magic Abounds in Tyria
The period explored in Guild Wars 3 takes place while the Elder Dragons remain dormant, allowing magic to spread throughout Tyria without being consumed by the dragons. That created a world where magic could develop freely, eventually leading to the emergence of the Vael, a unique group of magical spirits that became central to Orr’s ecosystem.
The Vaelwardens were created as an order dedicated to protecting those spirits. According to ArenaNet, the group became the first mortals in Tyria to gain access to magic after receiving the ability to create and refine signets from the human goddesses Melandru and Dwayna.
Signets, which are described as magical gems containing fixed expressions of power, would eventually become one of the biggest forces shaping Tyria during this period. As more groups learned to create them, magic became a resource that could be traded, sold, and exploited across the world.
That expansion put the Vaelwardens at odds with the changing world around them. While the order focused on protecting Orr’s magical ecosystem, other groups saw the region as an opportunity to harvest its resources and accelerate civilization.
Among those groups are the Mavenwrights, a guild of industrialists who believe Orr’s magical resources should be used to advance Tyria. Their beliefs directly conflict with the Vaelwardens, who view the Vael and their environment as something that needs protection rather than exploitation.
By the time Guild Wars 3 begins, the Vaelwardens are no longer a powerful organization. ArenaNet describes them as an order that has been pushed aside by much of society, with many considering them outdated for refusing to accept the changes happening around them.
That puts players in the role of rebuilding and defending a faction that has already lost much of its influence. Rather than joining an established group at its peak, players will experience the decline of the Vaelwardens while attempting to determine the future of Orr and its magical inhabitants.
The reveal also provides a new perspective on one of Guild Wars’ most important locations. In Guild Wars 2, Orr was defined by its destruction following the rise of Zhaitan. Guild Wars 3 will instead explore Orr during the height of its magical prosperity, long before the era players experienced in Guild Wars 2.
